Grand Opening
May 7th through June 4th, 2005
Opening Reception: May 7, 2005
Black Maria, a new gallery dedicated to non-mainstream and underground art, will open in Atwater Village on May 7.
“Our focus will be on works that reverberate with the shock of the content – not in a gratuitous sense, but in a way that initiates wonderment, self-reflection, and, ultimately, a measure of enlightenment,” proprietor Zara Zeitountsian said. “We’ll be specializing in art that, despite being of undeniable technical and substantive merit, might be deemed too unorthodox or obscure by big-name galleries or museums.”
According to the curators, Black Maria will strive to become an organic bridge between local artists (both known and, even more importantly, as yet unknown) and the public, by presenting art that’s approachable and affordable in equal measure.
The grand opening of Black Maria will be marked by a group exhibition. It will feature recent works by Los Angeles artists Thomas Lee Bakofsky, Frieda Gosset, Sophia Gasparian, Sam Saghatelian, Mark Todd, Jaime Zollars, Jeff Morgan & Loraine Villarreal and Esther Pearl Watson.
